Welcome to the Sustainable Materials (SUSMAT) Lab, a premier research hub within the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM), located in the heart of Saudi Arabia’s dynamic Eastern Province. SUSMAT Lab stands at the forefront of engineering innovation, dedicated to the development and optimization of high-performance materials designed for a carbon-neutral and sustainable future. Our research philosophy is anchored in the synergy between advanced materials science and environmental stewardship, ensuring that every technological breakthrough contributes to a global circular economy.

Under the leadership of Dr. Abdullah Al Bari, SUSMAT Lab brings together interdisciplinary expertise to address the entire lifecycle of engineering materials, from the fundamental synthesis and characterization of carbon-based and advanced functional materials to the intelligent design of next-generation composites enhanced by Artificial Intelligence (AI) and data-driven methodologies. This technical innovation is underpinned by rigorous Techno-Economic Analysis (TEA), enabling the translation of laboratory-scale discoveries into commercially viable and industrially scalable solutions.

By seamlessly integrating computational modeling, machine learning, and experimental synthesis, SUSMAT Lab provides a dynamic research environment for a dedicated team of MSc, PhD, and postdoctoral researchers. Our work focuses on engineering materials that are not only mechanically robust and high-performing but also environmentally responsible, thereby redefining the role of materials science in advancing sustainable technologies and safeguarding the planet for future generations.

SUSMAT Lab actively seeks collaborative partnerships with industry, academic institutions, and research organizations worldwide. Our collaborative efforts are designed to deliver quantifiable innovation by solving high-impact engineering problems and accelerating the deployment of sustainable materials and manufacturing solutions at industrially relevant scales.
